Big Door FAQs answered
What are Big Doors?
Big Doors are our massive, oversized patio doors that can open entire walls to the outdoors. Their openings can be up to 60 feet wide and 16 feet tall. They come in different options and types so you can enjoy luxurious indoor/outdoor living no matter where you live and no matter if you’re renovating an existing space or building new.
What type of large glass doors are available?
We have four main types of large glass doors:
Folding Outswing Doors: Folds open like an accordion and runs along a single track. It can open from the center or just from one side. It’s a great option for remodels or where you don’t have space to pocket the door into the wall but still want a clear, unobstructed opening.
MultiGlide™ Doors: Slides open with glass panels that each run on their own track. It can open from the center or just from one side. Typically, panels stack to the side when open, but there’s also a pocketing option that can maximize your opening.
Liftslide Doors: Slides open almost weightlessly with glass panels that can run along a straight track, wrap around a corner, or curve. It can pocket into the wall for a completely clear opening. It’s our most luxurious Big Door and it comes in the biggest sizes and an impressive array of configurations.
Pivot Doors: Pivots open from a single pivot point on the top and bottom instead of a side hinges. It can create large, luxurious openings that seem to float open. Our glass Pivot Doors are usually used in entryways to create a modern, airy opening.
What is a modular glass wall system?
A modular glass wall system is a large glass door that’s segmented into multiple glass panels. All of our Big Doors are modular glass wall systems, and we have different types to choose from, so you can find one that works for you whether you're renovating or building new, on the coast, or up north.
What is the largest sliding door size available?
The largest sliding door we offer is our Liftslide Door. It can be up to 60 feet wide and 16 feet tall. The next largest sliding door we offer is our MultiGlide™ Door, which can be 50 feet wide and 10 feet tall.
How much does a moving glass wall system cost, including installation?
As with all window and door pricing, your cost varies by the options you choose (size, type of door, configurations), your location, your project type. Visit our pricing page for more information, or request a quote so we can give you an accurate estimate.
What is the difference between a pivot door and a bi-fold door?
There are several differences between these two types of doors including the way they open, how big they can be, and where they’re typically used. Here's a quick comparison:
Pivot doors: Commonly used as entry doors. They can't create openings as wide as bi-fold doors, but can still be very large. They consist of one or two large panels that open from pivot points on the top and bottom (instead of a side hinge). Our Pivot Door can create openings up to 18 feet wide and 16 feet tall.
Bi-fold doors: Commonly used within the home to open an entire wall to the outdoors. Bi-fold doors can create a much wider opening than pivot doors because they consist of numerous panels that are joined together and fold open like an accordion to one or both sides. Our Folding Outswing Door is a bi-fold door that can create openings 48 feet wide and 10 feet tall.
Which Big Doors have the smoothest operation?
While we design all our Big Doors to be easy to open, our Liftslide Door features a unique lifting design with rollers that gives it a more weightless feel than a traditional sliding door. Our Pivot Door is also luxuriously smooth, pivoting open on a single-axis pivot point and closing with a smooth assist that requires very little effort. On our MultiGlide™ Door, you can select automatic openings to open and close with the touch of a button.
Which Big Doors offer the best views with minimal frames?
Generally speaking, our MultiGlide™ Door, Liftslide Door, and Multi-Slide Door can all offer a thin contemporary frame and panoramic views, with the product size you choose influencing which will give you the most glass. Here’s a quick summary:
For the thinnest frames: Look at our MultiGlide Door with panel profiles of only 2.75 inches. These thin panel profiles can combine to create a view that’s 50 feet wide and 10 feet tall.
If you live in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, or Texas: You can go even thinner with our Aluminum Multi-Slide Door with panels that have a 2.5-inch rails (top and bottom of the door panel) and 1.39-inch stiles (sides of the door panel), which can combine to create a view that’s 44 feet wide and 12 feet tall.
For the biggest sizes with the most glass: Look at our Liftslide Door, which can be up to 60 feet wide and 16 feet tall. The individual glass panels that make up this door can also be up to 14 feet wide with narrow 3.5-inch profiles for the largest amount of glass of any of our Big Doors.
Keep in mind that you can configure all of our Big Doors with thin frames and incredible views since all have profile options under 4 inches and can open up entire walls of your home.
What are the most energy-efficient options for extra-large exterior doors?
Which Big Doors are ADA accessible?
We have options with many of our doors that assist in complying with sliding door threshold height requirements, such as:
MulitGlide™ Door: Can be configured with a flush sill or an on floor drainage sill with optional interior or exterior sill ramps.
Folding Outswing Door: Can be configured with a flush sill or ramped low-threshold sill.
Liftslide Door: Can be configured with a flush sill.
Pivot Door: Can be configured without a sill or with a flush sill.
Note that these options may not be suitable for all climates. Information about mandatory requirements for door threshold heights and other applicable accessibility requirements for doors under the FFHA and ADA can be found by visiting http://www.fairhousingfirst.org and http://www.ada.gov. Our interior ramp cannot be used with an optional raised threshold.
What are the most popular designs for Big Doors?
Bi-fold doors like our Folding Outswing Door are always popular thanks to their design and versatility. Since they accordion open and neatly stack to the side, they can open up entire walls without requiring space for pocketing into a wall. The best part is that our Folding Outswing Door performs from the Midwest to the coast and comes in very large sizes with thin profiles. See it in this impressive new build of a Minnesota Modern Tudor and this remodel which transformed a 1950’s ranch-style home into "something you’d see in LA.”
Our MultiGlide™ Door is another popular choice with impressive options available, like pocketing and automation, and a wide range of sizes.
What’s the difference between patio doors and Big Doors?
